• UNH to host Physical Education Workshop - Posted February 2, 2009

Teaching Games using the New Tactical ApproachDurham: CRN 25783, May 12, Tuesday, 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., NH Hall Gym and Rm G37, .55 CEUs, $125, lunch included

Many physical education teachers in the U.S. and worldwide have embraced a new way of teaching games that is often called the "tactical" or "teaching games for understanding" approach instead of the traditional, technical approach. While the traditional approach focuses on skill development that eventually leads up to game play, the tactical approach starts with small-sided game play and then addresses skills that may need to be developed to improve play. A typical lesson would have a small-sided game, followed by a teacher-led Q&A session, then a skill development phase, ending with a second small-sided game and a final Q&A wrap-up. Students who are taught this way are not often heard asking, "Why do we have to do this drill when can we play a game?" In this approach, the emphasis is on game play, but also provides opportunities during the Q&A sessions for students to discuss their weaknesses and understand why they are asked to work on certain skills. Skill development takes place through more open-ended tasks that students find more challenging and enjoyable. This workshop will consist of lecture, discussion, and activity-based components. You will be engaged in actually playing games, modeling Q&A sessions, and experiencing open-ended skill sessions. Assessing game play will also be discussed. While playing will not be a requirement, it is hoped that most of you will participate, so come prepared to be active. (Parking is at your own expense ($8). Pick up a pass at the UNH Visitor's Center, which is next to Parking Lot A. A map will be sent with your registration receipt.

Instructor: Steve Wright is an associate professor at UNH and the Kinesiology Pedagogy Option Coordinator. One of his areas of specialization is curriculum development.

Other items of interest include our spring conference, Stressed-Out Teachers, Stressed-Out Students (http://www.learn.unh.edu/stress/) and a variety of other general topics (http://www.learn.unh.edu/pcw/pd/sched.php?id=51#68).
