Physical Best Activities and Your
Curriculum

workshop will provide information about the
Physical Best Resources & how to integrate some
of the activities into your existing program.
Physical Best is a comprehensive health-related
fitness education program which helps students gain
the knowledge, skills & attitudes to enjoy a
healthy, active lifestyle. This workshop will focus
on the fitness components: Aerobic Endurance,
Flexibility, Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance
& Body Composition. The lessons included in the
Resource Guides provide a starting point for the
inclusion of these health-related components into
your existing curriculum. Join us & be ready
for a hands-on, active workshop.We will define the
component, participate in lessons from our Physical
Best Guides, discuss its relationship to the
National Standards & NH PE Guidelines &
provide assessment ideas.

The ABC’s of Grading – Connecting
Assessment to Grading—Louise
McCormack, Plymouth State University,

presentation will focus on the components of
assessments and grading. A review of
assessment, common vocabulary, and grading
templates will be shared. Audience will have the
opportunity to discuss philosophy on grading,
current grading systems and deterrents for change.

Traditional Barn Dances to Live Fiddling &
Calling
– Dudley Laufman & Jacqueline Laufman;
jdlaufman@comcast.net—Attending
teachers who plan to teach traditional social barn
dances will have the necessary tools to lead their
students in experiencing firsthand the living
musical traditions of New England that have been
handed down from generation to generation without
interruption for over 300 years.
Dancing to live fiddling and calling, attendees
will learn how barn dances are primarily social
activities that cultivate a sense community
recreation with rhythmic movement suitable for all
ages and abilities. These nationally recognized
presenters give the steps and methods of teaching
and calling dances, including the
Virginia
Reel with
variations for young children. With over 60 years
of experience, dancing master Dudley Laufman
intersperses history and culture of traditional New
England dances, suggests uses of their book having
CDs with the calls on them and a demo DVD, and, how
to host their own community or family barn dance,
using local musicians, as a culmination of a dance
or social studies unit.
